**New Delhi:** Two Janata Dal (United) leaders have resigned from the party, protesting its support for the Wakf Amendment Bill. The resignations come as the Rajya Sabha debates the bill, which was already passed by the Lok Sabha.
Mohammad Qasim Ansari and Mohammad Nawaz Malik, the latter being the JDU’s minority cell chief, submitted separate resignation letters to Bihar Chief Minister and JDU leader Nitish Kumar. Ansari stated that the party’s support for the bill contradicts its policies towards the Muslim community, expressing his deep disappointment. Malik highlighted the long-standing support the Muslim community has given to the JDU.
Meanwhile, in the Rajya Sabha, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge criticized the bill, claiming it infringes on minority rights and urged its withdrawal. While acknowledging some improvements over the 1995 act, he pointed out that the Lok Sabha passage was achieved with a relatively narrow margin (288 votes in favor, 232 against).
