Fri Apr 04 01:44:38 UTC 2025: ## Tiruchi Launches Mass Rabies Vaccination Drive for Stray Dogs

**Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu, April 4, 2025** – The Tiruchirappalli Corporation is launching a four-phased vaccination drive to administer anti-rabies booster shots to stray dogs within the city. The initiative, beginning this Friday, aims to curb the spread of rabies.

Initially, 5,000 dogs will receive booster doses, with the number increasing depending on vaccine availability. The drive prioritizes the 22,030 dogs already sterilized and vaccinated. Dog catchers will use butterfly nets to capture the animals, administer the vaccine, and mark their ears to indicate vaccination.

City Health Officer M. Vijay Chandran explained that booster shots are crucial for dogs potentially exposed to the rabies virus through bites or contact with infected animals at feeding points. He emphasized the importance of public awareness, urging residents to exercise caution when feeding stray dogs and to seek immediate medical attention if bitten or scratched by any unvaccinated animal. Early anti-rabies vaccination for humans is vital to prevent infection, Mr. Chandran stressed. The corporation believes this mass vaccination program will significantly reduce rabies incidence in the city.
