Fri Apr 04 01:03:06 UTC 2025: ## IMF Chief Warns of Global Economic Risk from Trump’s Sweeping Tariffs

**WASHINGTON, April 4, 2025** – International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva issued a strong warning Thursday about the potentially devastating impact of sweeping new tariffs announced by U.S. President Donald Trump. Georgieva stated that the tariffs pose a “significant risk” to the already sluggish global economy.

In a statement, Georgieva urged the U.S. and its trading partners to engage constructively to de-escalate trade tensions and avoid further harm to the global economy. While acknowledging that a full macroeconomic assessment is ongoing, she stressed the significant threat the tariffs represent to global growth prospects.

This marks a stronger stance from Georgieva than previously expressed. While she had earlier indicated that the tariffs would likely lead to a slight downward revision of the IMF’s economic outlook and acknowledged increased uncertainty, she had not characterized the risk as significant until now. The newly announced tariffs far exceed expectations of trade experts.

The IMF plans to provide a detailed assessment of the tariffs’ impact in an updated World Economic Outlook report to be released during the April 21-26 meetings in Washington, D.C.
