Thu Apr 03 18:43:12 UTC 2025: **Delhi Unveils 50-Year Water Management Master Plan**

**New Delhi, April 4, 2025** – Delhi Water Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh announced a comprehensive 50-year water management master plan Thursday, aimed at preventing future water crises in the capital. The plan follows concerns over current water shortages.

The announcement came during an inspection of the Wazirabad Water Treatment Plant (WTP), where Minister Singh highlighted the plant’s reduced capacity due to silt accumulation. The plant, designed for a 220 MGD (million gallons per day) storage capacity, currently holds only around 100 MGD due to silt build-up along a one-kilometer stretch. Desilting work, expected to take one to one-and-a-half months, is underway to restore full capacity.

Further initiatives include regulating ammonia levels in the Yamuna River. The Delhi Jal Board (DJB) has enlisted the Territorial Army to monitor and address illegal dumping and encroachment along the riverbed, key contributors to water pollution.

Minister Singh criticized past water management as reactive, stating that the new long-term plan will focus on upgrading pipeline infrastructure, improving water conservation efforts, and optimizing water distribution across the city. Delhi’s daily water requirement stands at 1,290 MGD for its 21 million residents, with last year’s maximum supply reaching only 1,000 MGD – a 22% shortfall. The new plan aims to address this deficit and ensure long-term water security for Delhi.
