Fri Apr 04 00:39:32 UTC 2025: ## Three Myanmar Nationals Arrested for Smuggling Exotic Animals in Mizoram
**GUWAHATI, April 4, 2025** – Three Myanmar nationals were arrested on Thursday for attempting to smuggle exotic animals across the India-Myanmar border near Mizoram’s Zokhawthar town. Assam Rifles personnel and Mizoram Forest Department officials seized 24 African spurred tortoises, three Patagonian maras, and an albino Burmese python, with an estimated value of ₹1.31 crore (approximately $1.6 million USD).
The suspects, identified as Thawngsuangmunh (26), Biakzapiang (26), and Jeecy Lalnunmawia (31), from Myanmar’s Chin State, were apprehended while attempting to cross the Tiau River border carrying the animals in concealed containers. The Chin State is known as a hub for smuggling various contraband items, including drugs and exotic wildlife, into Mizoram.
The seized animals and the arrested individuals have been handed over to the Champhai Forest Department for further investigation and legal proceedings. Authorities believe the animals were likely destined for markets in southern and western India. The incident highlights the ongoing challenge of combating wildlife trafficking along the porous India-Myanmar border.
