Fri Apr 04 02:50:48 UTC 2025: ## East Coast Railway Sets New Freight Transportation Record

**Visakhapatnam, April 4, 2025** – The East Coast Railway (ECoR) has achieved a landmark feat in freight transportation, surpassing all previous records by transporting 259.254 million tonnes of originating freight during the 2024-25 financial year. This makes ECoR the first railway zone in India to cross the 259 million-tonne mark.

The achievement represents a 1.2% increase over the previous year, adding 3.034 million tonnes to the 2023-24 figures. This success comes despite various challenges faced throughout the year, highlighting ECoR’s efficient operations and strategic planning. The strong performance is attributed to significant contributions from the Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL) in Talcher, five major ports under ECoR’s jurisdiction (Visakhapatnam, Gangavaram, Paradeep, Dhamara, and Gopalpur), and key industries in steel, aluminum, and iron ore sectors.

ECoR General Manager Parmeshwar Funkwal praised the team for their dedication and effective coordination with various government sectors, industries, and stakeholders. He attributed the success to a commitment to continuous improvement and innovation. This marks the sixth consecutive year ECoR has surpassed the 200 million-tonne mark. Other zonal railways exceeding 200 million tonnes include the South East Central Railway (253.208 MT), South Eastern Railway (212.361 MT), and East Central Railway (202.62 MT).
