Vijayawada, April 4, 2025 – A central team from the AIIMS Mangalagiri, National Institute of Virology (Pune), and other agencies visited Narasaopeta in Andhra Pradesh’s Palnadu district on Thursday to investigate the death of a two-year-old child from multiple organ failure and H5N1 avian influenza. The team investigated potential epicentres of the virus in the region, interviewing local vendors and conducting surveys which found no signs of avian influenza among poultry. State Animal Husbandry Director Damodar Naidu briefed the team on local meat consumption practices and the possibility of some chickens developing immunity. The team also assessed the facilities at AIIMS Mangalagiri, recommending antibody testing for all staff involved in the child’s treatment and a review of patient admissions during the relevant period.
