**Gaza City, April 2, 2025** – A prominent Gaza family, the Abu Samra clan, executed a Hamas operative in broad daylight on April 1st in retaliation for the killing of their relative, Abdulrahman Sha’aban Abu Samra. The operative, identified as Ibrahim al-Najjar, a Hamas police officer, allegedly shot and killed Abu Samra while he was waiting in line for flour.
Videos circulating on social media show al-Najjar being apprehended before being shot while kneeling. The Abu Samra clan, in a statement on social media, confirmed their involvement but did not specify who fired the fatal shots. They denied reports that Abu Samra’s death was accidental.
Hamas condemned the act, issuing a statement vowing to prevent further instances of vigilantism. “We will not allow any party to spread chaos in the Gaza Strip or take the law into their hands,” the statement read. Hamas official Basem Naim attributed recent protests, some of which targeted Hamas, to general grievances stemming from the war and denied they were specifically directed against the governing group.
The incident highlights the complex power dynamics in Gaza, where powerful clans like the Abu Samra family often operate independently of Hamas, maintaining considerable influence and armed capabilities. Tensions between Hamas and these clans have flared periodically in the past, resulting in violent clashes. This most recent incident follows weeks of protests across Gaza, with demonstrators facing threats from Hamas and other groups who accuse them of collaboration with Israel. The ongoing unrest underscores the fragility of the situation in Gaza and the deep-seated tensions between Hamas and various factions within the population.
