**THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, April 3, 2025** – The cloves grown in Thalanad, Kottayam district, Kerala, have received a Geographical Indication (GI) tag from the Indian government, boosting the region’s spice industry. This recognition, secured through a joint effort by the Kerala Agriculture Department and Kerala Agricultural University (KAU), is expected to significantly enhance the international marketability of Thalanad cloves (“Thalanadan grambu”).
The high-altitude location of Thalanad grama panchayat, 3,000 feet above sea level, provides ideal conditions for clove cultivation. KAU studies have confirmed the superior quality of Thalanad cloves, highlighting their higher eugenol and caryophyllene content compared to cloves from other areas. The cloves are characterized by their attractive bud color and overall superior quality.
The Thalanadan Clove Growers and Processing Industrial Cooperative Society is leveraging the GI tag to brand and market the spice. The society manages all aspects of the clove production chain, from collection and processing to grading and marketing. The harvest typically takes place between December and January. The GI tag is anticipated to help distinguish and promote this unique Kerala spice on the global market.
