Thu Apr 03 16:50:00 UTC 2025: ## Waymo’s Self-Driving Taxis Gain Acceptance on the Peninsula

**San Mateo County, CA –** Waymo’s autonomous vehicle service, initially met with mixed reactions, is gaining traction in San Mateo County. Following a limited launch last year, the service has expanded to Daly City, Colma, and Broadmoor, with overwhelmingly positive feedback from some residents.

While initial concerns from the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors and residents regarding safety and local control prompted the county to advocate for greater municipal oversight of autonomous vehicles, recent data shows a promising safety record. The California Department of Motor Vehicles reports only two minor collisions involving Waymo in the county since August 2024, neither of which appeared to be caused by the autonomous vehicle. Statewide, Waymo has reported approximately 45 collisions since August 2024.

San Mateo County Supervisor Dave Canepa, a former vocal critic, has become a frequent Waymo user, stating, “I have a thousand problems, and Waymo isn’t one of them.” This sentiment is echoed by some residents who find the service appealing, particularly for its convenience and perceived safety compared to ride-sharing services with human drivers.

However, skepticism remains among some residents. Concerns about potential limitations in handling complex suburban driving situations, such as narrow streets with parked cars, continue to exist. Despite these reservations, the overall response suggests growing acceptance of autonomous vehicles on the Peninsula. The technology is viewed as potentially safer and more reliable than traditional ride-sharing alternatives, though concerns are acknowledged that it’s still a developing technology.
