Thu Apr 03 13:31:41 UTC 2025: ## Odisha’s Raghurajpur: A Heritage Village Fights for Survival Amidst Artistic Flourishing

**Puri, Odisha, April 3, 2025** – Raghurajpur, a heritage village nestled in Odisha’s Puri district, is a vibrant tapestry of traditional arts and crafts. Known for its intricate Pattachitra paintings and delicate palm-leaf engravings (Talapatra Chitra), the village is a living testament to centuries of artistic heritage. However, despite its rich cultural legacy and national recognition, Raghurajpur faces challenges in maintaining its unique traditions.

Homes in Raghurajpur double as workshops, with artisans—men and women working side-by-side—creating stunning artwork using natural pigments and age-old techniques. From mythological tales brought to life on Pattachitra canvases to the meticulous carvings on dried palm leaves, the village hums with creative energy. While many artists have received national awards, bringing some recognition to Raghurajpur, the village remains largely unknown to wider audiences.

The village’s history is deeply intertwined with its art. Palm-leaf engravings date back to the 2nd century BCE, while Pattachitra paintings are intrinsically linked to Odisha’s temple traditions, particularly the Jagannath cult. However, the rise of cheaper alternatives, such as block-printed tussar silk, threatens the livelihoods of these dedicated artisans.

Ganjapa, a traditional hand-painted playing card game, is another art form facing extinction. Only one artist remains to carry on this unique tradition, highlighting the precarious state of some of Raghurajpur’s crafts.

Despite these challenges, there is hope. The establishment of the Raghurajpur Chitra Karigari Co-operative Society helps preserve these art forms, and government assistance during the pandemic provided crucial financial support. Furthermore, the Taj Puri Resort and Spa has begun actively promoting the village and its artisans, organizing tours and offering visitors the opportunity to witness the creation of these unique pieces firsthand. This initiative, along with growing awareness, offers a potential pathway toward revitalizing Raghurajpur’s cultural legacy and ensuring its survival for future generations.
