Thu Apr 03 14:48:57 UTC 2025: ## Pensioners Protest in Thoothukudi Against Central Government Amendment

**THOOTHUKUDI, April 3, 2025** – Hundreds of pensioners took to the streets of Thoothukudi today to protest a recent amendment to the pension act passed by the Indian central government. The amendment, which rejects salary increases recommended by the 8th Pay Commission, has drawn strong criticism from pensioners across the country.

The protest, organized by the National Co-Ordination Committee of Pensioners’ Association (NCCPA), saw over 400 participants demonstrating in front of the Income Tax office. L. Ramamoorthy, District Coordinator of the Joint Committee on All Pensioners’ Association, led the demonstration. He criticized the government for passing the amendment on March 25th, 2025, before the 8th Pay Commission had even begun its work, arguing that the changes will negatively impact public sector pensioners nationwide.

A separate protest was also held by the BSNL pensioners association near the BSNL office, echoing similar concerns about the government’s pension policies. Pensioners from across the district participated in this demonstration. Both protests highlighted the widespread anger and discontent among pensioners regarding the recent amendment.
