Thu Apr 03 12:51:03 UTC 2025: ## Rural Karnataka School Redefines Education with Sustainable Skills Training

**Melkote, Karnataka – April 3, 2025** – A groundbreaking educational initiative in rural Karnataka is challenging conventional notions of literacy by empowering village youth with practical, sustainable skills. Jeevana Shaale, or “Life School,” located near Melkote in Mandya district, offers an alternative education model focused on traditional knowledge and hands-on learning.

Founded by the Janapada Seva Trust, a Gandhian organization dedicated to non-violence and sustainable living, Jeevana Shaale caters to adolescents aged 14-18. Unlike traditional textbook-based learning, the school emphasizes real-world skills relevant to rural life, fostering self-sufficiency and bridging the gap between formal schooling and practical needs.

The curriculum integrates organic farming, hand weaving, natural dyeing, and even bull-driven oil extraction, with students dedicating four hours daily to these activities. They also receive a small stipend for their work. Other components include strengthening Kannada and English language skills, mindfulness exercises (spinning the Charakha), kitchen gardening, and environmental education.

Dr. Sumanas Koulagi of the Janapada Seva Trust highlights the school’s commitment to “knowledge democracy,” recognizing the value of traditional skills often overlooked in formal education. The four-year program aims to equip students with multiple options for future employment, potentially within the Janapada Seva Trust’s network or with other social enterprises that prioritize sustainable living.

Currently with seven students, Jeevana Shaale plans to expand its enrollment. Its success demonstrates a growing societal acceptance of alternative educational approaches that value practical skills and traditional knowledge alongside academic achievement. The school’s innovative model serves as a potential blueprint for similar initiatives across the country.
