Thu Apr 03 08:03:02 UTC 2025: ## EU Vows Retaliation After Trump Announces New Tariffs

**London, April 3, 2025** – The European Union has vowed to retaliate against the new tariffs announced by U.S. President Donald Trump, which impose a 20% tax on EU goods, among others. While expressing regret over the decision, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen confirmed the EU is preparing countermeasures to protect its interests.

Trump’s announcement includes a 10% baseline tariff on all imported goods, escalating to higher rates for specific countries. China faces a 34% tariff, India 26%, and Vietnam 46%, while the UK and Switzerland face 10% and 31% tariffs respectively.

Von der Leyen stressed that these tariffs would negatively impact global trade, creating uncertainty and complexity. She noted that the EU had already begun preparing a response to earlier tariffs on steel and aluminum and is now developing further countermeasures should negotiations fail. The EU is also monitoring for indirect consequences, such as the potential dumping of goods from third-party countries previously destined for the US market.

While hinting at a willingness to reform the international trading system, Von der Leyen emphasized that tariffs should not be the first or last resort. She reassured EU citizens, calling the European Single Market a “safe harbour” in these difficult times, highlighting its strength and unity in the face of challenges posed by its “oldest ally.” Earlier this week, she announced the EU was also streamlining internal trade regulations to further mitigate the impact of Trump’s actions.
