Tue Apr 01 23:00:00 UTC 2025: ## Long Island Serial Killer Suspect Rex Heuermann’s Case: A Timeline of Accusations and Legal Battles
**Riverhead, NY** – Rex Heuermann, a 59-year-old architect from Massapequa Park, remains incarcerated, awaiting trial on charges related to the murders of seven women over nearly two decades. His case, the focus of Netflix’s upcoming docuseries “Gone Girls: The Long Island Serial Killer,” has captivated the nation and brought renewed attention to the infamous Gilgo Beach killings.
Heuermann’s arrest in July 2023 marked a significant breakthrough in a decade-long investigation into the deaths of at least 11 women, many of whom were sex workers, whose remains were discovered near Gilgo Beach between 2010 and 2011. Initially charged with the murders of Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, and Amber Costello (the “Gilgo Beach Four”), the charges were later expanded to include Maureen Brainard-Barnes, Sandra Costilla, Jessica Taylor, and Valerie Mack.
The breakthrough came after a newly formed task force in 2022 re-examined the case, utilizing advancements in DNA technology and re-evaluating existing evidence, including cell phone records and eyewitness accounts. A crucial piece of evidence was DNA from a discarded pizza box, which matched DNA found on Waterman’s body.
Heuermann, who maintained his innocence throughout, allegedly led a double life. While presenting himself as a devoted family man and successful architect with clients including Target and American Airlines, investigators believe he used burner phones and fictitious accounts to contact sex workers. Police also recovered a document outlining methods for concealing bodies and evading detection.
A special hearing in March 2025 addressed the admissibility of DNA evidence, with a scientist testifying to its scientific validity. Heuermann’s legal team requested the exclusion of DNA evidence and separate trials for each murder, motions that are still under consideration.
Since his arrest, Heuermann has been held at the Riverhead Correctional Facility. His wife, Asa Ellerup, filed for divorce shortly after his arrest and finalized the divorce in March 2025 but has reportedly been visiting him weekly. Their children are grappling with the accusations against their father. Suffolk County Sheriff Errol D. Toulon Jr. has described Heuermann as relatively compliant and adapting to prison life. The trial date remains pending.
