**New Delhi, April 2, 2025** – The Lok Sabha is set to debate and pass the controversial Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, today. The Bill, introduced last August, aims to significantly revise the 1995 Waqf Act, granting the central government greater control over waqf properties. Opposition parties have strongly criticized the proposed changes. The government, however, touts the bill – to be renamed the Unified Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency, and Development Act, 2024 – as a necessary reform to improve the administration and management of waqf properties.
