Tue Apr 01 15:53:59 UTC 2025: ## Greek Islands Battered by Devastating Storms; Emergency Assistance Requested
**ATHENS, GREECE** – Ferocious storms have wreaked havoc across the Greek islands for a second consecutive day, causing widespread damage and prompting emergency assistance requests. Crete bore the brunt of the intense weather, experiencing record rainfall and severe flooding that trapped seven people in their vehicles. Rescue crews successfully freed the stranded individuals.
The Cyclades islands, a popular tourist destination, were also severely impacted. Paros and Mykonos saw hailstorms and torrential downpours that overturned cars and left streets littered with debris. Authorities are working to clear roads and assess the damage to infrastructure. Both islands have requested emergency government assistance.
Rhodes experienced gale-force winds, resulting in fallen trees and damaged vehicles. Elsewhere, rockslides and road closures hampered travel on Crete. The National Observatory of Athens reported the highest rainfall in the past 24 hours near the Cretan port of Chania.
As a preventative measure, schools were closed on Tuesday on several islands including Paros, Mykonos, Rhodes, Kos, Kalymnos, Symi and Tilos. These recent storms strike just weeks after a significant earthquake swarm impacted Santorini and nearby islands, further disrupting the region.
