Wed Apr 02 00:47:24 UTC 2025: ## China Launches New Military Drills Near Taiwan, Heightening Tensions

**TAIPEI/BEIJING** – China’s military announced further military exercises in the Taiwan Strait on Wednesday, escalating tensions with the self-ruled island. These drills, focused on the strait’s central and southern regions, follow large-scale exercises conducted Tuesday that simulated a complete blockade of Taiwan.

The exercises, according to Senior Colonel Shi Yi of the Eastern Theater Command, are designed to test the military’s capabilities in blockade and control, as well as precision strikes. The strategically important waterway, a vital shipping lane, is now the site of heightened military activity.

Tuesday’s drills involved China’s army, navy, air force, and rocket forces, prompting a response from Taiwanese defense forces. This latest escalation follows a pattern of increased Chinese military presence around Taiwan in recent years, reflecting Beijing’s persistent claim of sovereignty over the island, a claim rejected by Taipei.

The heightened tensions have been exacerbated since Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te’s inauguration in May 2024. The ongoing situation presents a significant flashpoint between China and the United States, Taiwan’s key security partner, with Washington’s support for Taipei a major point of contention for Beijing. China has repeatedly warned of the potential use of force to bring Taiwan under its control.
