Bengaluru, April 2, 2025 – The Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) has reported a significant surge in Unified Payments Interface (UPI) payments for bus tickets, marking a major step towards a cashless ticketing system. In March 2025, UPI transactions accounted for a record 39.8% of total ticket revenue, reaching ₹35.5 crore out of a total revenue of ₹83.39 crore.
This dramatic increase follows a concerted effort by BMTC since January 2025 to promote cashless payments through the implementation of static UPI QR codes on 75% of its bus fleet. UPI revenue showed consistent growth, jumping from ₹19.66 crore in January to ₹29.36 crore in February, and finally reaching ₹35.5 crore in March. The corporation even achieved a milestone on February 8th, exceeding ₹1 crore in UPI ticket payments in a single day. February and March saw daily averages of ₹1.04 crore and ₹1.14 crore respectively in UPI collections.
BMTC attributes this success to its proactive promotion of UPI payments, aiming to improve passenger convenience and operational efficiency. The recent increase in bus fares, which raised the minimum fare from ₹5 to ₹6 and the maximum fare for non-air-conditioned buses to ₹32, is also believed to have contributed to the rise in UPI usage as passengers and conductors sought to avoid handling large amounts of change. The corporation highlighted that the shift to digital payments has streamlined transactions, benefiting both passengers and staff. This achievement underscores BMTC’s commitment to modernizing public transport and promoting a cashless ticketing system.
