Tue Apr 01 17:50:00 UTC 2025: ## Villanova Lands Experienced Coach Kevin Willard After Successful Maryland Stint

**PHILADELPHIA, PA –** Villanova University has appointed Kevin Willard as its new men’s basketball head coach, ending weeks of speculation and a nationwide search. Willard, who most recently led the University of Maryland to a Sweet 16 appearance, will replace Kyle Neptune.

Willard’s three-year tenure at Maryland saw the Terrapins achieve a 27-9 record this past season, culminating in a Sweet 16 berth. However, his departure follows comments he made regarding needed fundamental changes within the Maryland program, particularly concerning NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) compensation and budgetary restrictions. Willard publicly expressed frustration with Maryland’s approach to NIL, describing it as among the worst in the country. He also cited instances where seemingly minor program expenditures, like an extra night in New York for Christmas team celebrations, were deemed too costly.

Villanova President Rev. Peter M. Donohue stated that Willard’s impressive coaching record, coupled with his vision for the program and alignment with the university’s mission, made him the standout candidate. The move marks a return to the Big East Conference for Willard, a Long Island native who previously enjoyed a highly successful 12-year stint as head coach at Seton Hall University, where he led the Pirates to five NCAA tournament appearances.

Willard’s coaching career also includes stops at Iona College and assistant coaching roles under Rick Pitino at Louisville and with the Boston Celtics. He succeeds Neptune, who failed to lead Villanova to the NCAA tournament in his three seasons. The Wildcats’ program is now under new leadership as it aims to regain its former glory under the guidance of Willard, a coach with proven success and a clear vision for building a winning program.
