**NEW YORK, NY** – The US Attorney General, Pamela Bondi, has ordered federal prosecutors to pursue the death penalty against Luigi Mangione, the man charged with the murder of UnitedHealth Group CEO Brian Thompson last year. Mangione, who has pleaded not guilty to state charges of murder as an act of terrorism and weapons offenses in New York, now faces a parallel federal indictment that carries the possibility of capital punishment.

While Mangione could face life imprisonment without parole if convicted on the state charges – New York does not have the death penalty – the federal indictment opens the door to a potentially lethal sentence. Mangione’s lawyers have yet to respond to requests for comment. He has not yet entered a plea on the federal charges.
