**Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh, April 1, 2025** – A 300-person group, including Buddhist monks, village chiefs, tourists, and border security personnel, embarked on a 100-kilometer trek Monday to commemorate the 14th Dalai Lama’s escape from Tibet in 1959. The “Freedom Trail” journey began near the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Tawang district and will conclude at the Tawang Monastery on April 5th, marking the anniversary of the Dalai Lama’s arrival in Tawang.
The trek, organized by the Tawang district administration, started with prayers and cultural performances. Lungla MLA Tsering Lhamu highlighted the historical and spiritual significance of the event, emphasizing the enduring relationship between Arunachal Pradesh and Tibet and the Dalai Lama’s commitment to peace and compassion. The ITBP received a portrait of the Dalai Lama and a branch from a sacred tree as a gesture of respect.
The challenging trek involves daily stretches of varying lengths and difficulty, with support provided by the ITBP and Indian Army. The group is expected to reach the Tawang Monastery after covering the final 28 kilometers on April 5th. The event serves as a powerful reminder of the Dalai Lama’s escape and the shared history and cultural ties between Arunachal Pradesh and Tibet.
