Mon Mar 31 18:14:21 UTC 2025: ## Tambaram Residents Protest Lack of Sewage System Funding in 2025-26 Budget

**Chennai, March 31, 2025** – Residents of Wards 29, 30, and 31 in Tambaram Corporation are protesting the absence of allocated funds for underground drainage (UGD) systems in the 2025-26 budget. The lack of proper drainage is causing raw sewage to flow into local water bodies, including Thiruneermalai Naatu Kalvai, Periya Eri, and Veeraraghavan Eri, leading to water contamination, groundwater degradation, unsanitary conditions, and foul odors.

Hundreds of residents recently formed a human chain to protest the situation and demand urgent action to restore Periya Eri. In response, a Tambaram Corporation official stated that a UGD work plan has been submitted to the state government and work will commence within three months upon receiving funds. Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for drain renovations and new installations are also awaiting state approval.

Residents argue that the ₹5.15 crore allocated for water resource development will be ineffective without a comprehensive drainage system. They are urging authorities to reconsider budget allocations and prioritize UGD implementation in their wards to address the severe sanitation issues.
