BOSTON, MA – Negotiations between the Boston Red Sox and starting pitcher Garrett Crochet for a contract extension have stalled, with no agreement reached before Crochet’s self-imposed Opening Day deadline. Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow confirmed that an extension is not expected at this time, stating the team will respect Crochet’s wish to avoid negotiations during the season.
Crochet, acquired in a significant trade that sent four prospects, including top-100 talents Kyle Teel and Braden Montgomery, to the Chicago White Sox, told WEEI that talks were “down to the wire” and the gap between the two sides wasn’t large. He indicated optimism for resuming negotiations next offseason.
The lack of a deal is unsurprising given the uncertainty surrounding Crochet’s long-term value. While his 2024 performance (3.58 ERA, 35.1% strikeout rate) was impressive, his limited major league experience and injury history raise concerns about his durability and justify the Red Sox’s cautious approach. Reports last summer suggested Crochet was targeting a contract similar to Tyler Glasnow’s $136.5 million deal.
The Red Sox will now have the opportunity to assess Crochet’s performance throughout the 2025 season before entering further contract negotiations. Another strong season could significantly increase his market value next winter, potentially making a deal much more expensive for the Red Sox.
In other Red Sox news, outfielder Masataka Yoshida, currently on the injured list, will remain in Boston for further consultation and rehabilitation of a back issue, delaying his planned minor league rehab assignment.
