**Bangkok, Thailand – March 29, 2025** – A powerful 7.5 magnitude earthquake that struck Myanmar on Friday has left a trail of destruction in its wake, causing significant damage in Thailand’s capital, Bangkok, over 1,000 km from the epicenter. At least three people have been killed in Bangkok, and dozens are feared buried under the rubble of a collapsed skyscraper.
According to India’s National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake’s severity stemmed from two key factors: soil liquefaction and resonance. The earthquake’s shaking frequency matched the natural vibration of many buildings, exacerbating the damage. Soil liquefaction, where saturated ground loses strength and behaves like a liquid, further contributed to the collapse of structures, particularly in areas with loose, wet soil.
The NCS reported seven aftershocks following the initial quake, with one reaching magnitude 7. The earthquake, originating from the Sagaing Fault, sent energy waves directly towards Bangkok, explaining the city’s substantial damage despite its distance from the epicenter in Mandalay. The agency noted that the region has a history of significant seismic activity.
The Myanmar government has declared a state of emergency in six regions, including Nay Pyi Taw and Mandalay. Rescue efforts are underway in Bangkok at the site of the collapsed skyscraper. The full extent of the damage and casualties is still being assessed.
