Tue Apr 01 15:54:40 UTC 2025: ## Tangedco Ordered to Pay ₹5 Lakh Compensation in Electrocution Case
**Madurai, April 1, 2025** – The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has ordered the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco) to pay ₹5 lakh in compensation to the family of a man who died after being electrocuted by a fallen power line in 2011.
The court heard a petition filed by G. Kalimuthu, whose father, Gurusamy, was electrocuted while working in his agricultural field in Ramanathapuram district. Gurusamy stepped on a downed power line that Tangedco failed to repair promptly.
Tangedco argued that the line snapped due to heavy wind and rain the previous day and that they maintained the line according to the Electricity Act. However, Justice V. Lakshminarayanan ruled that Tangedco’s negligence in failing to address the downed wire immediately resulted in the death. The court found Tangedco’s explanation insufficient, noting that they should have inspected the lines before restoring power. The judge concluded that immediate action could have prevented the fatal accident. The court therefore ordered the compensation payment.
