Mon Mar 31 19:06:12 UTC 2025: ## Chennai Corporation Exceeds Property Tax Target

**Chennai, April 1, 2025** – The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has announced a significant increase in property tax revenue, collecting ₹2,020 crore between April 1, 2024, and March 31, 2025. This surpasses last year’s collection of ₹1,755 crore. The impressive figure is attributed to a surge in online payments, reaching 86% of total transactions last year, up from a mere 2% previously. A GCC official credited the increase to a public awareness campaign and improved online payment systems, including simplified methods and increased server capacity to handle the higher volume of transactions. The convenience of online payment facilitated tax collection even from assessees residing abroad.

The corporation also saw a significant increase in revenue from identifying previously under-assessed properties across the city’s 15 zones and a rise in property taxes for larger homes (over 600 sq. ft.). The Central Business District saw a particularly strong final day surge, with collections exceeding ₹3 crore on March 31. While the collection was successful, the GCC notes that some assessees remain outstanding on their payments.

The news comes following a recent government decision to halt drone surveys aimed at further augmenting property tax revenue. Starting April 1st, the GCC will encourage assessees to pay their taxes online or via demand draft.
