**New Delhi, April 1, 2025** – Taiwanese electronics giant Foxconn is significantly expanding its iPhone production in India, investing ₹276 crore ($32.25 million) in new machinery to nearly double output. This expansion comes just one day before the anticipated imposition of reciprocal tariffs by the U.S. on several countries, including India.

A source confirmed the investment to the Press Trust of India (PTI), stating that Foxconn Hon Hai Technology India Mega Development Private Limited acquired the equipment specifically to boost iPhone manufacturing. While Foxconn and Apple did not respond to requests for comment, the move signals a major commitment to India as a production hub.

Furthermore, Foxconn is set to begin exporting Apple AirPods from its Hyderabad plant this month, marking the second Apple product manufactured in India after iPhones.

The Indian Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA) has meanwhile proposed eliminating import duties on U.S. mobile phones, arguing that the U.S. isn’t a major manufacturing competitor and represents a significant export opportunity for India, valued at $80 billion. The current import duty stands at 15%.
