Tue Apr 01 15:39:06 UTC 2025: ## Bengaluru’s Outer Ring Road Gets ₹400 Crore Makeover
**Bengaluru, April 1, 2025** – Bengaluru’s Outer Ring Road (ORR), a crucial artery for the city’s IT sector, is set for a major ₹400 crore redevelopment. The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) announced the project, which will see the 22.7 km stretch between K.R. Puram and Central Silk Board transformed into a world-class infrastructure corridor.
The revamp, to be overseen by a newly formed Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV), includes white-topping the main carriageway, upgrading service roads to a uniform width of 6-7.5 meters, and constructing modern public utilities along the service roads. These utilities will feature benches, parks, and potentially commercial spaces under flyovers.
Other improvements include wider, pedestrian-friendly sidewalks, improved drainage systems, the planting of areca palm trees along the median, and the upgrade or relocation of bus shelters, some of which will be air-conditioned. The project aims to address the ORR’s notorious traffic congestion, exacerbated by the ongoing Phase 2A metro line construction, which is expected to be completed by mid-2026. The SPV will begin work on stretches where metro construction is finished. Approximately 12 km of the 17 km stretch currently under BMRCL’s purview has been vacated, allowing for concurrent work.
Civic activist R.K. Mishra highlighted the economic significance of the project, noting that the ORR generates 32% of India’s total IT revenue. A detailed project report (DPR) is expected within three months, followed by the tendering process. The BBMP aims to begin construction within four months.
