Tue Apr 01 15:30:00 UTC 2025: ## Death Penalty Sought for CEO Murder Suspect

**New York, NY** – Attorney General Pamela Bondi announced Tuesday that federal prosecutors will seek the death penalty against Luigi Mangione, the man charged with the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Mangione, 26, was arrested in December following a nationwide manhunt after Thompson was fatally shot in midtown Manhattan last year.

Bondi cited President Trump’s agenda on violent crime as the reason for pursuing capital punishment. She described Thompson’s death as a “premeditated, cold-blooded assassination” of an innocent man and father of two.

Mangione, who pleaded not guilty to federal charges of stalking and murder, and state charges of first-degree murder in furtherance of terrorism, has yet to respond through his attorney to the Attorney General’s announcement. The December 4th shooting and subsequent search for Mangione garnered national attention. He was ultimately apprehended in Altoona, Pennsylvania, five days after the crime.
