Tue Apr 01 14:37:40 UTC 2025: ## 95 Arrested After Anti-Mnangagwa Protests in Zimbabwe

**Harare, Zimbabwe** – Zimbabwean police have arrested 95 individuals following demonstrations in Harare calling for President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s resignation. The arrests stem from Monday’s protests, which saw approximately 200 people gather at Freedom Square, where they allegedly threw stones at police officers and briefly blocked a major road. The demonstrators chanted slogans such as “Enough is enough” and “Mnangagwa must go,” according to police charges cited by AFP.

The protests, organized by war veterans who have since turned against Mnangagwa, were largely quelled by a heavy police presence in Harare and other cities. The war veterans, led by Blessed Geza, oppose plans by the ruling ZANU-PF party to extend Mnangagwa’s term in office until 2030, despite his current term being his last. While the protests were limited, a significant number of businesses, schools, and shops remained closed in what appeared to be a stay-away protest.

The 95 arrested individuals, who appeared in court on Tuesday, face charges of promoting public violence. Geza, while thanking supporters for their participation, indicated that he would not be organizing further demonstrations, but promised future actions aimed at removing Mnangagwa and his government. The incident highlights growing discontent with Mnangagwa’s leadership within Zimbabwe.
