Bengaluru, April 1, 2025 – The Leader of the Opposition in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly, R. Ashok, has appealed to Speaker U.T. Khader to overturn the six-month suspension of 18 BJP MLAs. The MLAs were suspended for allegedly disrespecting the Speaker by throwing paper during a protest against allegations of honey-trapping and Muslim-specific reservation in public works contracts.
In a letter to the Speaker, Mr. Ashok described the suspension as harsh and argued it hinders the MLAs’ ability to perform their duties. He maintained the protest was unintentional and not directed at the Speaker, suggesting the MLAs would have offered clarification if given the opportunity.
Mr. Ashok emphasized the BJP’s respect for the Speaker’s position and their commitment to upholding the legislature’s dignity. While acknowledging concerns about declining debate quality and adherence to rules, he appealed for the suspension’s revocation, citing the importance of democratic principles.
