**CHENNAI, April 1, 2025** – A.K. Kannan, a 56-year-old civil engineer with Doordarshan, has resumed his unique environmental initiative in Chennai after a temporary relocation to Guwahati. For years, Kannan has been personally collecting discarded flower offerings and other temple waste from Chennai temples, diligently transporting them to Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) compost yards. His commitment continues despite a demanding job that requires him to split his time between Chennai and Guwahati. Even with reduced composting yard options, Kannan persists, also collecting recyclable materials like plastic bottles and delivering them to scrap dealers.
Kannan’s actions are inspiring others to adopt sustainable practices. Riddhi Khandhar, an event manager, actively incorporates composting into her work, ensuring floral decorations from events are properly recycled, often partnering with the Namma Ooru Foundation. While challenges remain in applying sustainability to large-scale events due to cost concerns, Khandhar promotes environmentally conscious choices even in smaller gatherings, emphasizing that even small steps towards sustainability make a significant difference. Both Kannan and Khandhar highlight the need for increased individual responsibility in tackling environmental issues.
