CHENNAI, INDIA (April 1, 2025) – World-ranked No. 30 Honoka Hashimoto of Japan captivated audiences at the recent WTT Star Contender Chennai tournament. The unheralded defensive player reached the women’s singles final, ultimately losing to her compatriot and second seed, Miwa Harimoto. Hashimoto’s impressive run included an upset victory over top seed Hina Hayata in the round of 16. Despite the loss in the final, Hashimoto’s skillful defensive play earned her considerable praise.
In an interview with *The Hindu*, Hashimoto discussed the challenges of being a defensive player in a predominantly offensive sport, particularly with the introduction of plastic balls. She cited the difficulties of generating spin and the increasing speed of the game as contributing factors to the scarcity of defensive players.
