**New Delhi:** A Delhi court has ordered the filing of a police case against Union Minister for Law and Justice Kapil Mishra and several others for their alleged involvement in the 2020 Delhi riots. Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Vaibhav Chaurasia ruled that there is sufficient evidence to warrant an investigation into Mishra’s role in the violence that claimed 53 lives, injured over 500, and caused extensive property damage.
The order follows a complaint filed by Yamuna Vihar resident Mohammad Ilyas, who accused Mishra, BJP MLA Mohan Singh Bisht, former BJP MLA Jagdish Pradhan, and the then Station House Officer of Dayalpur police station, among others, of inciting violence and participating in the destruction of property. Ilyas’s complaint alleges that he witnessed Mishra and others vandalizing vendors’ carts in Kardampuri and claims that police officers stood idly by. He further alleges the involvement of the named BJP leaders and the SHO in the vandalization of mosques.
Delhi Police, who previously investigated Mishra’s alleged role and concluded he was not involved, opposed the plea. However, the court found sufficient “prima facie evidence of a cognisable offence” requiring further investigation into Mishra’s presence in the affected area during the riots. The court’s decision marks a significant development in the ongoing investigation into the 2020 Delhi riots and challenges the Delhi Police’s earlier findings.
