KHARKIV, Ukraine – A Russian drone attack on the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv has killed two and wounded at least 35, including five children, prompting accusations of war crimes from Ukrainian officials. The attack, which occurred overnight Saturday into Sunday, targeted residential areas, a military hospital, a shopping center, and apartment buildings, according to Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov. He reported that seven Iranian-made Shahed drones were used in the assault, marking the second such attack in a week.
The Ukrainian military stated that servicemen were undergoing treatment at the targeted medical facility at the time of the attack, alleging that Russia deliberately shelled the hospital, violating international humanitarian law. One survivor, Anton, described being showered with shrapnel and narrowly escaping death.
The attack on Kharkiv was part of a larger wave of Russian aggression. Ukraine’s Air Force reported that Russia launched 111 drones and one ballistic missile across the country, targeting Sumy, Odesa, and Donetsk regions in addition to Kharkiv. Ukrainian air defenses reportedly shot down 65 drones and jammed 35 more. The Russian Defense Ministry claimed to have struck 140 Ukrainian sites, but made no mention of the hospital attack.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attacks, stating that Russia has launched over 1,000 drones in the past week and demanding a stronger response from Western allies. He also warned of an impending Russian spring offensive in northeastern Ukraine. These attacks come amidst ongoing accusations of ceasefire violations by both sides, following a US-brokered partial truce.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot echoed Ukraine’s condemnation, stating that Russia’s actions constitute war crimes and calling into question Russia’s commitment to peace. The incident further underscores the ongoing conflict and raises concerns about the potential for future escalations. International efforts to secure peace and support Ukraine continue, but the recent events highlight the dire humanitarian situation and the ongoing brutality of the war.
