**COIMBATORE, March 31, 2025** – A novel initiative by the Government Railway Police (GRP) in Mettupalayam has launched a WhatsApp group aimed at improving the safety of women passengers on crowded Mettupalayam-Coimbatore trains. The group, currently boasting 100 members, seeks to address concerns of harassment faced by women commuters, particularly students, travelling during peak hours.

Sub-Inspector D. Manoharan of the Mettupalayam GRP stated that the group was formally launched last week. Advocate Maheshwari highlighted that while older women often feel more confident in self-defense, many students silently endure harassment. The WhatsApp group is anticipated to act as a deterrent.

C.P.S. Shanthi, a member of the Mettupalayam Station Consultative Committee, emphasized plans to expand the group’s reach to school and college students through pamphlets and collaboration with educational institutions. Ms. Shanthi also expressed hope that the initiative will prevent men from entering women’s-only compartments, particularly relevant given anticipated increases in train services and track improvements on the Coimbatore-Mettupalayam line.
