Mon Mar 31 09:13:54 UTC 2025: ## Rahul Gandhi Urges Modi to Cancel Offshore Mining Tenders

**New Delhi, March 26:** Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, has called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi to cancel tenders for offshore mining projects along the coasts of Kerala, Gujarat, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. In a letter dated March 25th and released publicly on Sunday, Gandhi expressed serious concerns about the environmental and socioeconomic impact of the proposed mining operations.

Gandhi’s letter highlights the lack of rigorous environmental impact assessments prior to the tendering process. He argues that the government’s decision to open offshore mining blocks to private companies without consulting local stakeholders, particularly fishing communities, is deeply concerning. He points to the potential devastation to marine life, coral reefs, and fish stocks, threatening the livelihoods of millions dependent on fishing.

Specific concerns raised include the impact on vital fish breeding habitats in Kollam, Kerala, and the potential damage to the unique biodiversity of the Great Nicobar Islands, a globally recognized marine hotspot. Gandhi cites ongoing research by the University of Kerala’s Marine Monitoring Lab indicating potentially devastating consequences for fish breeding.

The Congress leader also criticized the government’s reliance on the Offshore Areas Mineral (Development and Regulation) Amendment Act, 2023, which he says has faced strong objections. He emphasized the need for comprehensive scientific studies assessing both the environmental and socioeconomic consequences before any further action is taken.

Gandhi’s appeal concludes with a plea for inclusive decision-making, urging the government to prioritize consultation with all stakeholders, particularly the fishing communities whose lives and livelihoods are directly tied to the health of the oceans. He emphasizes the need for a sustainable approach to resource management, urging the government to reconsider its current stance on offshore mining.
