Sun Mar 30 18:59:37 UTC 2025: ## Chennai Metro Stations Host Down Syndrome Awareness Events
**Chennai, March 31, 2025** – A series of events promoting awareness of Down Syndrome were held Sunday morning in three Chennai Metro Rail stations: Alandur, Chennai Airport, and Chennai Central. Organized by the Down Syndrome Federation of India, the events featured children with Down Syndrome showcasing their talents through dance and silambam (a traditional South Indian martial art). Parents also shared their experiences.
Rekha Ramachandran, co-founder of the Federation, highlighted the effectiveness of using public spaces like metro stations and airports for raising awareness. She noted that while the Chennai airport’s illumination on Down Syndrome Day was impactful, direct interaction with the public is crucial for genuine understanding. The events aimed to demonstrate that children with Down Syndrome can and should actively participate in public life and utilize public transport. Ramachandran emphasized that Down Syndrome is a condition, not a disease, and stressed the need for greater societal support. The initiative saw positive engagement from commuters, many of whom showed keen interest in learning more.
