Mon Mar 31 15:55:04 UTC 2025: ## Parandur Airport Project Receives Key Recommendation

**Chennai, March 31, 2025** – The proposed Parandur greenfield airport in Tamil Nadu has cleared a major hurdle, with a high-level Steering Committee recommending the project for approval by the Ministry of Civil Aviation. This recommendation follows a March 12th meeting in New Delhi involving representatives from various ministries and agencies, including the Ministry of Civil Aviation, Tamil Nadu government, and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

The airport, planned with two parallel runways, is projected to handle 100 million passengers annually upon completion of all four phases. The Tamil Nadu government aims to begin construction of the first phase in 2026.

While the state government declined to comment, sources indicate that most departments supported the project, although certain conditions must be met before construction commences. The DGCA highlighted the need to remove obstacles such as chimneys and electric lines, while concerns regarding water bodies and potential flooding were also discussed. The state government assured the committee that these issues would be addressed.

The NITI Aayog raised concerns about the displacement of 1,005 families. The Tamil Nadu government responded that a comprehensive rehabilitation and financial assistance program is under development.

The Centre granted site clearance on August 1, 2024, with the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation submitting the application for in-principle approval to the Ministry of Civil Aviation a month later. With the Steering Committee’s positive recommendation, the formal announcement of project clearance is expected imminently.
