**Yangon, Myanmar/Bangkok, Thailand –** The death toll from Friday’s powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake in Myanmar has tragically climbed to 2,056, the ruling junta announced Monday. The quake, which struck at a shallow depth, also left 3,900 injured and 270 missing, three days after the disaster. National flags in Myanmar will be flown at half-mast until April 6th to mourn the victims.
The earthquake’s impact extended beyond Myanmar’s borders. In Bangkok, Thailand, at least 18 people perished when a skyscraper under construction collapsed following the tremors. The building, a joint project between a Chinese company and a long-standing Thai construction firm, is now under investigation to determine the cause of the collapse. Four Chinese men were detained attempting to remove documents from the site. Relief efforts are underway in both countries.
