Mon Mar 31 06:02:07 UTC 2025: ## Myanmar Earthquake Death Toll Rises Above 1,700; Hundreds Feared Dead in Mosques

**Mandalay, Myanmar –** The death toll from Friday’s devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake in Myanmar has climbed to over 1,700, with thousands more injured and hundreds still missing, according to the military-led government. A Myanmar Muslim organization has reported that over 700 worshipers may have perished in the quake, with at least 60 mosques damaged or destroyed during Friday prayers in the holy month of Ramadan.

The earthquake struck near Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city, causing widespread destruction. Videos circulating online show several mosques collapsing during the tremor. Tun Kyi, a member of the Spring Revolution Myanmar Muslim Network, stated that many of the affected mosques were older structures, making them more susceptible to earthquake damage. It remains unclear if the deaths in the mosques are included in the official government tally.

The government spokesperson, Maj. Gen. Zaw Min Tun, reported 3,400 injuries and over 300 missing persons. Rescue efforts continue, though hopes of finding more survivors are dwindling three days after the disaster. Many residents have spent nights sleeping outdoors. The earthquake also impacted neighboring Thailand.
