**Jalpaiguri, West Bengal –** A court in Jalpaiguri district has sentenced Suresh Roy to death for the brutal murder of his cousin, Sankar Das, in March 2021. Additional Sessions Judge Biplab Roy delivered the verdict on March 29th, citing the extreme brutality of the crime – 18 stab wounds inflicted on an unarmed victim.
Judge Roy drew a parallel to the Mahabharata, highlighting the principle of not attacking unarmed combatants. He described the murder as “extremely brutal, grotesque, diabolical, revolting, and dastardly,” a “rarest of the rare” case warranting capital punishment. The judge expressed doubt about the possibility of the convict’s rehabilitation, stating that “a demon’s mind cannot be changed.”
The death sentence is subject to confirmation by the Calcutta High Court. This ruling follows a series of capital punishment awards in West Bengal in the past year, though not all murder cases have resulted in death sentences. Judge Roy himself has handed down the death penalty in at least two other murder cases in the past year. The case highlights a trend of increased capital punishment sentences in West Bengal’s courts since August 2024.
