Sun Mar 30 22:30:00 UTC 2025: ## Cubs’ Swanson Executes Game-Ending Defensive Gem in Thrilling 4-3 Victory Over Diamondbacks

**PHOENIX, AZ** – Dansby Swanson’s exceptional defensive instincts and years of experience culminated in a game-winning play Saturday night, securing a 4-3 Chicago Cubs victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks. With runners on first and second and two outs in the ninth, Swanson showcased his baseball acumen, faking a throw to first before sprinting to third base and tagging out the Diamondbacks’ pinch runner, Garrett Hampson, in a spectacular diving play.

The play, described by Cubs manager Craig Counsell as “brilliant,” prevented the Diamondbacks from loading the bases and potentially scoring the winning run. Swanson attributed his success to years of preparation and visualization, honed during his time at Vanderbilt University.

The game was a nail-biter, with the Diamondbacks staging a ninth-inning comeback. Eugenio Suárez’s two-run home run off Cubs closer Ryan Pressly brought Arizona within one run. Pressly, however, earned his first save with the Cubs despite a subsequent walk that put runners on first and second.

Meanwhile, the Cubs’ offense was fueled by Kyle Tucker’s first home run as a Cub (part of a three-hit, two-RBI night), Miguel Amaya’s RBI double, and Matt Shaw’s first big-league home run. Left-hander Shota Imanaga delivered a stellar performance, holding the Diamondbacks to one run and three hits over seven strong innings, his performance aided by a key defensive play by Pete Crow-Armstrong in the fourth inning. Crow-Armstrong’s 92.5 mph throw nailed a tagging-up runner at third base, a play confirmed after a replay review.

Imanaga expressed gratitude to Counsell for pushing him to pitch into the seventh inning, allowing him to conserve the bullpen. The win snapped a string of recent heartbreaking losses for the Cubs at Chase Field. Swanson’s play, however, was the defining moment, a testament to his baseball IQ and athleticism.
