Sun Mar 30 18:59:51 UTC 2025: ## Chennai to Build Air-Conditioned Rest Stops for Gig Workers

**Chennai, March 31, 2025** – The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) announced plans to construct air-conditioned rest areas for gig workers involved in food and e-commerce deliveries across the city. Inspired by a similar initiative in Dubai, these facilities will be located in key areas such as Anna Nagar, Nungambakkam, Royapettah, Mylapore, and T. Nagar.

Currently, gig workers often congregate along major roads with inadequate safety and facilities, particularly vulnerable during monsoon and summer months. The lack of safe spaces has resulted in incidents of theft, including stolen mobile phones and food parcels, as well as vehicle towing. Charging devices and restroom access are also significant challenges.

The new rest areas aim to address these issues, improving road safety and encouraging compliance with traffic rules. Each facility will include designated parking and essential amenities. The project is expected to significantly benefit women gig workers, who currently represent only about 10% of the workforce due to safety concerns and lack of facilities.

While a 600 sq ft facility is considered sufficient for each location, finding suitable space in congested areas remains a challenge. The GCC hopes the initiative will boost both worker well-being and customer satisfaction.
