Sun Mar 30 14:58:49 UTC 2025: ## Government Takes Majority Stake in Vodafone Idea, Converting Debt to Equity
**New Delhi, [Date]** – The Indian government has significantly increased its stake in struggling telecom company Vodafone Idea, converting ₹36,950 crore (approximately $4.5 billion USD) in outstanding spectrum auction dues into equity. This move, announced Sunday, will boost the government’s ownership from 22.6% to approximately 48.99%, making it the majority shareholder.
The conversion involves issuing 3,695 shares to the government at ₹10 per share. The shares are to be issued within 30 days. The outstanding dues include deferred payments that were due after a moratorium period. This action is in line with a September 2021 relief package designed to support the Indian telecom sector.
Despite the government’s increased stake, Vodafone Idea’s promoters will retain operational control of the company. This equity conversion follows a request from Vodafone Idea CEO Akshaya Moondra to the telecom department, highlighting the company’s inability to meet its financial obligations, including a ₹5,431 crore shortfall related to the 2015 spectrum auction.
The government’s intervention is a major development for Vodafone Idea, which has been grappling with significant debt. The conversion of debt into equity is expected to provide the company with much-needed financial breathing room. However, the long-term viability of the company remains a subject of ongoing discussion and analysis within the industry.
