CHENNAI, March 30, 2025 – The World Health Organization (WHO) has once again highlighted the innovative work of Banyan, a Chennai-based NGO, in its recent publication, “Guidance on Mental Health Policy and Strategic Action Plans.” Banyan’s “Home Again” project, a community-based housing option for individuals recovering from mental illness, is showcased as a successful model for community integration.
The project, operating for nine years across ten states, provides long-term housing and support to help individuals transition from institutional care to independent living. A nine-year trial involving three cycles demonstrated significant improvements in community inclusion, reduced disability levels, and enhanced quality of life among participants. Banyan’s co-founder and managing trustee, Vandana Gopikumar, emphasized the program’s focus on shifting from institutional settings to home-like environments, fostering social participation.
This is the second time Banyan’s work has been recognized by the WHO. The organization’s community-based approach was also featured in the WHO’s 2021 edition, “Guidance on community mental health services: Promoting person-centred and rights-based approaches.” The current recognition underscores the effectiveness of Banyan’s model in promoting recovery and community integration for individuals with mental health needs.
