Sun Mar 30 11:49:14 UTC 2025: ## Bangkok Rooftop Pool Turns into Waterfall as 7.7 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Myanmar

**Bangkok, Thailand** – A powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake, the strongest to hit Myanmar in over a century, sent shockwaves across Southeast Asia on Friday, causing widespread devastation and dramatic scenes, including a rooftop infinity pool in a Bangkok hotel overflowing its edges.

Video footage circulating online shows the moment the earthquake struck, turning a tranquil infinity pool at The Athenee Hotel into a churning torrent. Waves crashed over the pool’s sides, sweeping away a couple relaxing on inflatable loungers. A man by the pool urgently signaled for them to escape the surging water, narrowly avoiding injury. The cascading water then flooded the surrounding deck area and poured from the rooftop onto the streets below.

Similar scenes unfolded across Thailand and Myanmar, as high-rise rooftop pools across the region overflowed, creating temporary waterfalls and drenching city streets. The sudden surge of water caught many pedestrians off guard, with some reported to have been swept off their feet.

The earthquake, which struck at 12:50 pm local time in central Myanmar, triggered a massive 6.4 magnitude aftershock. Tremors were felt as far as Thailand, China, India, Vietnam, and Bangladesh. The disaster has resulted in a tragic death toll, with at least 1,644 confirmed dead and over 3,400 injured in Myanmar alone, with those numbers expected to climb. In Thailand, at least 10 fatalities and dozens of injuries have been reported, with many more still missing.

Emergency responders are struggling to access affected areas in Myanmar, hampered by damaged infrastructure and severed communication lines. Buildings have collapsed, roads have been torn apart, and thousands are feared trapped under the rubble. The extent of the damage and loss of life continues to unfold.
