Sun Mar 30 08:30:00 UTC 2025: ## OpenAI’s Ghibli-Style Image Generator Overwhelms System, Prompts CEO to Call for a “Chill”
**San Francisco, CA** – OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has issued a plea to users to ease up on generating images with the company’s latest AI tool, GPT-4o, after it was inundated with requests creating Studio Ghibli-esque artwork. The unexpectedly high demand has overwhelmed OpenAI’s servers, forcing the company to implement temporary restrictions.
The surge in popularity of GPT-4o’s ability to generate images in the distinctive style of the acclaimed animation studio Studio Ghibli has led to a flood of user-generated content across social media platforms. Profile pictures, memes, and even reimagined movie posters in the Ghibli aesthetic are now widespread.
Altman took to X (formerly Twitter) to express his exasperation, stating that the demand was “insane” and that his team “needs sleep.” He defended his team against suggestions they be fired, highlighting their progress in developing both Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) and what he predicts will be “the biggest website in the world.”
To manage the influx, OpenAI has introduced daily limits on image generation. While paid subscribers retain full access, free users are now restricted to three images per day. Altman also revealed that the company’s GPUs are under immense strain, adding that AGI development would be accelerated if users reduced their image generation.
The rollout of GPT-4o hasn’t been without its challenges. OpenAI had to delay free user access and address a bug impacting image consistency. Despite these setbacks, the company highlights GPT-4o’s advancements over its predecessor, DALL-E, emphasizing improved accuracy and realism through a step-by-step image construction process.
The overwhelming response, ironically, even led to Altman updating his own profile picture with an AI-generated Ghibli-style version of himself. OpenAI assures users that efforts are underway to improve the tool’s efficiency and that the temporary restrictions are a necessary measure to prevent further strain on their system.
