Fri Mar 28 20:25:00 UTC 2025: ## Kashmir Jama Masjid Closure Sparks Outrage After Al-Quds Day Observance
**Srinagar, March 29, 2025** – The Jammu and Kashmir Police’s decision to prevent congregational prayers at Srinagar’s historic Jama Masjid on Friday, March 28th, has ignited widespread condemnation. The closure followed Al-Quds Day observances, where hundreds participated in pro-Palestine processions in Budgam district, chanting slogans and carrying banners against Israeli aggression.
Simultaneously, police registered cases under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) in Baramulla and Pattan against individuals displaying Hezbollah flags and raising slogans in support of the militant group. Authorities cited concerns about public order.
Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Kashmir’s chief cleric, strongly criticized the Jama Masjid closure, stating it infringes upon the fundamental right to religious practice and targets the heart of Kashmir’s religious identity. He highlighted the mosque’s repeated closures, including during Shab-e-Qadr, and questioned the claims of normalcy in the region.
Political leaders also voiced their disapproval. PDP leader Iltija Mufti and National Conference MP Aga Ruhullah condemned the move, with Ruhullah describing the mosque’s closure as an act of cowardice. He urged Muslims to observe Friday as Youm al-Quds, expressing solidarity with Palestine. The police, meanwhile, appealed for peace and urged citizens to refrain from actions that could disrupt public order.
